HSIAO-PIN YU APPOINTED AS ISCANN GROUP SENIOR ADVISOR

An expert in military defence and cybersecurity, Yu will advise on vulnerability assessments and advanced weapon systems

LONDON, 06 JANUARY 2021 – IScann Group, an open-source intelligence agency that enables companies to counter an array of modern threats, today announced that defence and cybersecurity expert, Hsiao-pin Yu (Yuster) has been appointed as an IScann Group, Senior Advisor.

IScann Group offers consultancy services for companies on vulnerability assessments, social media exploitation, alternative future analysis and advanced weapons systems. With over two decades of extensive military and national security experience, Yu will serve as an advisor in these fields.

Previously, Yu served as President of the Institute for Information Industry in Taiwan and as Senior Advisor for Taiwan’s Cyber Security department. It was here that he provided strategic insights on the development of the cybersecurity industry, focusing on intelligence operations, research and analysis. He also held several roles in the Taiwan Navy, one which involved coordinating the Taiwan Ministry of Defence and Taiwan Navy with its US counterparts. Heavily involved in US-Taiwan military relations, he also coordinated foreign policy programmes, as well as think tanks for defence and national security-related programmes.

“More and more individuals as well as corporations are falling victim to the most common cyber attacks, such as phishing, scamming and clickjacking. Due to the rampant oversharing on social media, this risk has further increased. But it’s not just personal data that is at stake, it is also company data, and inevitably government and national security data. I am pleased that I can work so closely with IScann Group to counsel people on how to effectively protect themselves against these risks,” states Hsiao-pin Yu, Senior Advisor at IScann Group.

Yu will also be contributing a series of thought leadership articles commenting on US politics and security in the Indopacific region, the new proposed Taiwan security bill, and defence in the South China Sea.

“We are excited to welcome Hsiao-pin Yuto IScann Group. His unparalleled experience and expertise will be an enormous asset to us and our clients, particularly as the importance of cyber defence and security is growing at an exponential rate,” says Andrew Vasko, Managing Director of IScann Group.

ISCANN GROUP SUPPORTS SENIOR ADVISOR IN CYCLE CHALLENGE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER

IScann’s Senior Advisor, Mike Gwynn, participates in the “Chase the Sun” cycle challenge to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK, a registered charity in England & Wales

LONDON, 25 NOVEMBER 2020 – IScann Group, an open-source intelligence agency that enables companies to counter an array of modern threats, today announced that it will sponsor Senior Advisor, Mike Gwynn, on his “Chase the Sun” cycle challenge to raise money for the charity Pancreatic Cancer UK.

This cycling event will be held on the longest day of the year. Beginning at 4:41am, the route will start at Minster, Isle of Sheppey, Kent on the east coast, and end at 21:33 at Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset on the west coast. The route will be a total of 205 miles.

“It will be my most challenging journey yet, however, I am feeling motivated as it is for a cause that I feel most passionately about. There are lots of things out there that can get us and cancer does not discriminate against the young and healthy. However, the more money, time and research that is put towards pancreatic cancer could mean that in the near future it might be possible to track it earlier. At the moment, pancreatic cancer only shows itself at an advanced stage, and often by then, it is too late. At the moment, it is important to spread the word, raise awareness and support the charities that are putting their resources towards further research,” says Mike Gwynn, Senior Advisor at IScann Group.

IScann Group is sponsoring Mr. Gwynn’s ride for pancreatic cancer and also making a donation to the charity.

“The general 5-year survival rate for people who have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer is as low as 9% – the lowest survival rate of all cancers besides mesothelioma. We hope that IScann Group’s involvement will play a role in encouraging other companies and individuals to get on board, ultimately leading to more visibility for the disease and a solution in the near future,” says Andrew Vasko, Managing Director at IScann Group.

“Chase the Sun” will be held on the 19th June 2021. It is a semi-organised event with usually about 70-100 people taking part, however, due to Covid-19, it is still yet to be officially confirmed.

If you would like to support Mike on his journey or learn more about pancreatic cancer and how you can help, you can find out more at www.pancreaticcancer.org.uk. or by contacting tien@redhill.world.

In light of the US elections, IScann Group examines how social media is being used to manipulate global politics, societies and economies

Manipulated: The Challenge of Disinformation Campaigns in the Age of Synthetic Media

London, 21 OCTOBER 2020 – IScann Group announced earlier today the release of its white paper – Manipulated: The Challenge of Disinformation Campaigns in the Age of Synthetic Media, researched and written by its Senior Advisor Tate Nurkin. The paper provides an in-depth examination of how a growing range of actors are using social media platforms to create and control narratives and manipulate targeted polities, societies, and economies around the world.

The technology behind deepfakes is advancing rapidly. It is being commoditized in ways that make it accessible to both government actors but also to a wide range of non-state actors: from political parties to extremist groups and criminal networks to ideologically imbued and tech-savvy individuals. With a focus on deepfakes as a particular concern, the whitepaper touches on how the spread of misinformation and disinformation is already having real-world political, social, geopolitical, and security consequences. Deepfakes use artificial intelligence (AI) to create realistic face and/or voice swaps thus creating manipulated media that make a person say or do something fabricated.

Government, security community, and technology company efforts at meeting the deepfake and disinformation challenge have been complicated in 2020. The coronavirus pandemic has created a near-ideal set of conditions for the spread of disinformation. A wide range of actors are attempting to capitalize on the growing sense of vulnerability and uncertainty many people throughout the world fear in order to achieve their specific political or geopolitical objective.

The intensification of geopolitical competition throughout the world is also complicating the challenges of disinformation, especially AI-enabled disinformation, as much of this competition is playing out over social media and in the information domain.

Geopolitical competition is intersecting with political events and social unrest in countries throughout the world. For example, protests in the United States over the summer of 2020, as well as the upcoming general election in November, have provided a testbed for an impressive array of new AI-enabled disinformation tools and tactics for their deployment.

The technologies behind deepfakes and synthetic profile photos are still maturing and are frequently detectable by humans. Still, the creation of fake “observable events”—even clearly synthetic ones—serve to reinforce ideological perspectives with what the report refers to as a “nihilistic effect of undermining the concept of truth and objective and observable reality upon which free and open societies rely.”

Meeting the challenge of AI-enabled disinformation will require a multi-faceted response not just from governments and national security communities, but also from social media companies, academia, and applied research centers. This response will likely evolve over time, but should, at a minimum, not end at the development of new technologies to detect, disrupt, and counter synthetic media and AI-enabled disinformation. It should, at a minimum, include good faith efforts to share data across the public and private sector and governments as well as more active and coordinated measures on the part of social media companies to identify and label synthetic media.

“The rapidly growing development and use of this technology is one of the greatest threats to open societies and is something that needs to be addressed on every level. The business, political and geopolitical manipulation possibilities are limitless, and the proliferation of these tools going unchecked will threaten the safety and stability of all open societies.” – Andrew Vasko, Managing Director of IScann Group.
